The Peavey Rage 158 (15 watts with an 8 inch speaker) is an awesome practice amplifier for any genre of music (metal, blues, country, rock). I find the overdrive on the amp is not very heavy, so I recommend a good distortion pedal for much heavier sounds.

Pros: Withstood all manner of abuse.
Cons: Sounds different when cranked to high volume.

I am not interested in sounding like Zeppelin or getting a "great tone." If anything, I would prefer my guitar to sound like Big Black and this little amp can give you just that. (Set the pre-amp to 5 and turn the mid-range all the way up) It has also proved plenty loud enough for playing smaller shows with bands which use drum machines instead of live drums.

The real selling point of this amp for me is that it has been through all manner of audio abuse and I absolutely could not kill it. Perfect for a noise band on a budget. I have even plugged a patch cord direct from the output into the input, resulting in a sound that could be heard a few blocks away. Several times! The amp still works!

The only downside is that once you get things to sound how you like at home, if you go to play a show and turn the amp all the way up, it will sound different. Instead run a line out into the PA or just mike the thing and you'll be in good shape. I lost mine and bought another one!
