First off, let me just say that I would recommend this movie to ANYONE. It's a great date movie. Guys will like it because it has sports in it, and because of the main character, a golf pro who can't resist a challenge. Girls will like it because of the romance and chemistry between the two lead characters. EVERYONE will love the smartass banter between Kevin Costner's Roy McAvoy and Renee Russo's Molly Griswold.
You DO NOT have to know anything about golf to be able to enjoy this movie. You may have to have a few golf terms explained to you, but you will enjoy it just as much.
Roy McAvoy is a driving range golf pro who never made it to the big time because of his irrepressible need to go for the risky shots. He never "plays it safe." That's what makes him different from his long-time rival, successful golfer David Simms, played by Don Johnson. It just so happens that Roy falls in love with Molly Griswold, who happens to be Simms's girlfriend. Roy and his caddy Romeo (played by Cheech Marin), come up with a plan: Roy will try to win the U.S. Open in order to win Molly's affections as well.
The ending is somewhat a surprise. I won't reveal details, but I will say that it's probably the best ending that this movie could ever have had. It stays true to the movie's theme, and is also ironic, in a way.
If I had to classify this movie into it's genres, I'd say that it's a Comedy-Romance-Sports movie. You WILL laugh. Though there are some elements of physical comedy, the majority of it is verbal comedy. The dialogue is extremely witty. I think this is my favorite thing about the movie. It makes the relationships between the characters interesting and fun to watch. There is a little bit of swearing, but it's in good taste.
In some ways, this is your typical Kevin Costner role. Roy McAvoy is a loner or an outcast, slightly misunderstood. However, you have never seen Kevin Costner display such charming vulgarity or such endearing vulnerability. He makes you cheer for Roy.
Cheech Marin is hilarious as Romeo, Roy's ever-loyal caddy. Renee Russo plays Molly Griswold with just the right amount of spunk and femininity. Don Johnson plays the slimebag David Simms a little too well. This was the first role I ever saw him in, and now I can't watch him in anything else without remembering what a jerk he played in this movie.
I'll also mention that "Tin Cup" has a wonderful soundtrack. It's one of the best soundtracks we own.
All-around, "Tin Cup" is one of my favorite romantic comedies. On my list, it ranks above "Pretty Woman," and is second only to "Notting Hill." Give it a chance. You won't be disappointed.
