| johnturner313's Full Review: AKG K 240M Professional Headphones |
I've been using cheapo headphones for several years, from Sony, Koss, and Akai. By 'cheapo' I mean in the $30-$40 dollar range. These headphones have always been the on-the-ear type.
When my most recent pair of Sony headphones bit the dust (don't get me wrong, they were good headphones, and lasted for longer than I could expect considering the low price I paid for them) I went looking for another set.
I have several good friends in the audio industry, as musicians, engineers, and broadcasters. I asked many of them what they recommended. They all had their own particular lists, but one set of headphones was on every list: the AKG240M. Others were the higher-end Sony, and several Sennheisers.
My budget for headphones was $100. I chose 2 sets of the AKG240M, I use one set at work, and one set at home. That way I don't have to carry one set from place to place. I found them at a local pro-audio supply house for $79 each. Times two, that was only a little above my budget, and I was able to get 2 sets instead of one.
The 240M are over the ear, at low volumes, this does not prevent me from hearing what is going on around me, yet still let's me enjoy my music. The over the ear style is also much better suited for work environments...my music doesn't interrupt anyone, whereas my coworkers who use on-the-ear style phones basically broadcast their music to everyone in the room...this can be annoying.
The mids and the bass are very crisp with the 240M, and the highs are clear and not tinny. I've used several different Sennheiser models, and in my opinion, the AKG240M provide a more earthy, real sound than the Sennheisers in the same price range. I'm an avid computer gamer, too, and hooked up to my MonsterSound 300 audio card, I get fantastic gaming audio with privacy, thanks to the over-the-ear style.
The AKG240M are not very heavy, either. I am a large person, with a large head, and they fit very well, and do not cause any discomfort.
I highly recommend the AKG240 Monitor to anyone looking for a top-notch, high-quality set of headphones, pro audio on a consumer budget. They're great headphones, and should last you a long, long time (i've had mine over a year).
