| narenji's Full Review: Sony TC-WE635 Single Cassette Deck |
When I auditioned this Sony tape deck at the local store, I was amazed at its ease of use, and its features. This tape deck has everything you may possibly want in a tape deck, barring the unique A/D-D/A conversion electronics that only Pioneer offers in some of its tape decks. This Sony deck is two steps above the lowest priced dual deck they sell. It has the obligatory feather touch or "full logic" controls, Dolby B/C, Dolby HX Pro, and digital counters and peak meters. It also has Auto Calibration, Auto Rec Level, and Music Search. What this deck gives you that others don't in this price range are two unique capabilities: Dual Deck Record, and RMS programming.
You'd wonder what RMS programming has to do with tape decks. Well, Sony has just adapted the usual CD programming capability to tape decks. RMS programming on a tape deck does work, but it doesn't bring out the same effect as it does on a CD player. The tape deck can remember which tracks you'd like to play in order, and it will try to do that, so long as you've left enough space between two songs. Although this feature's use is limited during playback, but it does allow you to make a good mix tape easier, because you can just program the songs, and the deck will record them in the right order on your new blank tape without you having to shuttle between songs as you dub tapes.
Both decks also record on this deck, which is a cool feature because it allows you to make simultaneous recordings of a source or make relay recordings-ie, you can have two tapes set to record a long program (from the radio for example)...
The deck is very easy to use, and though it has a lot of features, the controls are very accessible. The deck isn't particularly stylish, but it looks modern and has a nice control button layout. The sound is crisp and well-defined, much better than any deck I've ever listened to. Since most of my cassette use comes from dubbing tapes (I like Indian music, and most of it is sold on poorer quality tapes), so the features and the quality of this deck meet my demands perfectly. The deck is also CD-synchro compatible with Sony CD players, but recording is easy no matter what the source. If you're looking for a feature-packed mid-level cassette deck, definitely the 635 is worth a look. There aren't many decks in this price range with its features.
