Good SAT II prep: AP classes

Jun 26 '00

I've taken 4 SAT II tests, and what helped me the most in preparation were the AP (advanced placement) classes I took. The SAT II tests I took were Writing, Literature, Chemistry, and Math I. I scored pretty well on all of them.

SAT II does require some extensive preparation, whether it's part of a school course, or self-taught. Find out as much as you can about the subject tests you plan to take. Don't go in blind.

Taking AP English Language and AP Chemistry classes really helped me a lot, because in preparing for the AP exam, I learned everything I needed to know for the SAT II tests. AP has a national standard, which is why studying for an AP exam can prepare you for the SAT II, which is also a national exam. Your scores on the AP versus SAT exams may not be accurate indications of each other, though. For example, I scored 4 (out of 5) on the AP Language exam, but I scored an 800 (out of 800) on the SAT II Writing exam.

The difficult thing about the SAT II is that the tests are so specialized that unless you are taking a course about a certain subject, chances are that you're not going to know enough about that subject to take a whole test on it. That's why I recommend taking AP classes. If you can't or don't want to take an AP course, there are study guides that you can buy at bookstores to help you. Learning by yourself, from a book, is often more difficult than taking a class, though. But if you have the discipline and the time to monitor your studying well, it should all work out.

If a college requires the SAT II, it will probably require that you take the Writing and Math I tests, and one of your own choice. If you don't think you'll do very well on the exams, you might want to take them during your Junior year, just to get a feel for it. Then you'll have a better idea of what to study for, and you can be more prepared when you take it again.
