The Bottom Line: Has lots of feautures and is well constructed. It may look great but sounds awful. If you care about getting clear recordings I would avoid this machine.

| analogrulz105's Full Review: Teac W-790R Single Cassette Deck |
I had recently considered buying a new cassette deck to replace my basic Kenwood model. Finding something other than a Sony was hard in store due to the dwindling supply of tape decks. But at J&R music world in NYC they carried more brands. When I saw the Teac W790-R it looked stirdy and had all the features I was looking for and more, Dolby B, C, and Hx Pro. I've heard great things about Hx Pro, so this was my main reason. Also it had control of recording volume, something for some reason alot of decks don't have today.
I was so excited when I finally installed it and recorded my first tape. But when I listened to that tape later that day in my walkman, it sounded just awful. Muffled, hissy, and extremely little high end response. At first I thought, maybe it's the walkman, but the tape sounded distorted in any tape machine I played it in. Funny thing is the tape sounds fine in the Teac, but in no other machine. I make tapes to listen to in my walkman and on the outside, so this problem is major. I thought maybe the heads needed to be cleaned and I tried that, my next tape sounded just as awful. It also makes funny whistling sounds when rewinding or fastforward, and is very noisy.
UPDATE:I brought it down to the service center back in April, they looked at it and supposedly fixed it. It did sound better after they fixed it but still had poor quality with forward mode, but now it's old problems are acting up yet again. Sound quality is very poor and I'm getting a fluttering sound on my tapes. It is under a manufacturers warranty as well as an extended plan I bought. I just have to wonder what is wrong with the thing. So now I have to go to the service center again and have it looked at. J&R will not take the product back for exchange (they have a lousy return policy) so I am stuck with an unreliable, poor sounding tape deck.
I would not reccomend this deck under any circumstances. Teac has let me down big time, and the final cost of $180 (150 plus tax and ext warranty) is a waste of money.
