Recently when searching for software the search engine came up with J & R Music World. I’ve known about the physical store for a while now, having lived in the New York City area most of my life. I’d even visited it a few times many years ago. I didn’t know about the online presence until it turned up in the search engine.

Despite the name, J & R Music World is much more than music. Right from the home page you can see that they carry electronics, computer hardware and software, games, CDs, DVDs, and so much more.

The site is really easy to navigate as the categories are highlighted on the main page in three different sections. One is with tabs at the top, a second spot in the middle features current popular categories, and the third is near the bottom and lists some popular products as well as the categories they can be found in.

The prices are really terrific. I recently bought a portable DVD player for my kids to use in the car and I went back to J & R Music World to check out the prices. I was surprised that they had brand names for not much more than what my local Wal-Mart wanted to charge for a brand I’d never heard of. As I browsed around the site I saw other prices that were just as good.

I liked that all the names I saw in electronics and computers were name brands, not no-name brands who’s quality I would question. J & R Music World also sells gift cards which can be applied to any online order.

Shipping is generally based on the weight of the product with a minimum charge of $5.95. For movies and music shipping charges are $2.95 for the first item and an additional $.50 for each additional item. I found the price to be very reasonable for shipping, only beaten by some of the sites which offer free shipping.

J & R Music World accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards. Paying by check is not available online - you would need to call 1-800-806-1115 to place an order and pay for it with a check. Sales tax is only charged on orders being shipped within New York State.

I didn’t have to register to place my purchase at J & R Music World, but I did. This way I can track my order as well as store my information for quicker orders in the future.

Both of the orders I placed arrived in a reasonable time. My order for the software back in New York arrived faster than my more recent order in New Hampshire, but both were well within what I would call a reasonable time-frame.

I didn’t have to contact customer service or return anything I bought. If you do have to return anything to J & R Music World you must obtain Return Authorization direct from customer service. The customer must pay the freight on returns for any reason. TVs and monitors 20-inches and up, computer products, laser printers, and fax machines are not acceptable for credit, refund, or exchange and must be repaired by manufacturers' authorized service centers.

If you ever happen to be in New York City and want to check out their flagship store, it's located on Park Row across from City Hall Park. J & R Music World will give you up to 2 hours free parking nearby with a validated sales receipt of $100 or more.

I would definitely consider J & R Music World along with other online merchants the next time I have a computer or electronics purchase. Their prices are great and the brands they sell are names I trust. I haven’t had a bad experience. I would shy away from purchasing the products excluded in their return policy, simply because I wouldn’t want to purchase something over the Internet, have it shipped up here, find it’s defective, and then have to ship it out again. I’d rather pay a bit more and be able to return something to a local store if it was defective.
