Well, I've finally moved to the Windows XP platform. In other words, I've migrated from Windows 98 SE on a Pentium II to Windows XP on a Pentium IV. I was not planning on replacing my 17" conventional monitor, but when I saw a Microcenter ad for a "17" TFT Flat Panel for $299", I was interested. This is a 17" for the price of a 15".
Okay, so the price is right, but how does it perform. The feature that I looked for the most, was the Contrast Ratio, which for this monitor is 450:1. Not the very best, but not bad either. When I compared this with units that were rated at 500:1, I really could not see a significant difference. At 600:1, the results were quite evident, but I was not willing to spend $650.
I looked at the Sony monitors, since I had also purchased a Sony Vaio computer, but the image quality did not impress me. I also did not care for the styling of the Sony monitors.
Here is a summary of this monitor's features.
Supports analog PC and Apple Macintosh with optional adapter.
Supports DPMS for monitor power management.
Support DDC2B
On Screen Control: Auto-tune, Contrast, Brightness, H/V Position, H-Size, Phase, Auto-level, Color Control, OSD Position, OSD Time-out, Power Save Delay, Language, Information.
Built-in color active matrix TFT LCD that uses amorphous silicon TFTs as a switching device.
Resolution: up to 1280 X 1024
Color: 16.7M color support
Dot pitch: 0.264mm X 0.264mm
Scanning frequency: 30kHz - 89kHz(H), 56Hz-75Hz(V)
Power consumption Normal: 45 Watt Max
Off: 3 Watt Max
Weight: 6.0kg
At this price, there are no other models that can compare. All other units at this price are either smaller or they have much lower contrast ratios.
The only feature that I would have liked to see on this monitor is the ability to adjust the unit up or down. The only positioning adjustment is front to back tilt.
