| jo.com's Full Review: Fellowes P500-2 Strip-Cut Shredder |
I purchased this shredder at Office Depot after a friend recommended this particular shredder. I bought it for my husband who has for 20 years torn up exams by hand. We can now shred them!
About the shredder:
This is definitely a great shredder for home use. It has a 4.5-gallon basket, which isnt going to hold a large business worths of material but it will meet most home uses, in my opinion. For the price of $39.99 it cant be beat. I wish I had bought it a long time ago.
The wastebasket holds 125 shredded pages. Thats a lot for his little home office. It measures 15.6 inches high, 12.9 inches wide and 87.5 inch deep. There is a slit on the top of the machine that will hold a 9 inch wide piece of paper. The 7 sheets it shreds at a time (20# weight) are cut into 1/4 inch strips.
There is a switch on the top of the machine to turn it on. That is the only gizmo on this shredder. It is very simple to use.
The top of it, which has a handle so it can be lifted off and the paper emptied, is heavy. That is something to be aware of. The bottom is feather light just like a wastepaper basket. The cord is attached to the top of the shredder the top that comes off and is 55 long if length of a cord is an issue for you.
It weighs about 7 pounds.
The cutters on this shredder will shred staples and credit cards, so even though it is small and simple, it is pretty powerful. We keep ours on the floor under a table but it can easily be put on a table if the space you have is such that this would be necessary. I love the auto start-stop feature. What this means is that when paper is inserted it starts to shred automatically. Now that can be a negative because if you have it plugged in you dont want your children near it. Having said that, I will also say that the teeth that shred the paper can be seen but they cant be touched they are somewhat enclosed but I would keep mine unplugged when not in use since it starts automatically.
I find that after shredding, a few strands are left in the teeth but this machine has a reverse function for both that purpose and to get rid of paper jams. We havent had many jams. Once in awhile if Im moving too quickly, it will jam. I do find that it is really fast.
I have also found that it is fairly quiet. It isnt silent, thats for sure, but it wont wake your neighbors!
There is a manufacturers warranty of one-year for parts and labor and 3 years for the cutting heads.
If you want this info:
120V Volts
Amps 1.5A
Hz 60 Hz PH1 UL
My final thoughts:
This isnt a perfect machine. The top is heavy, the bottom lightweight. It can just hold 7 pieces of paper dont try to stick in more or it will jam. But its function is as a personal home shredder, not for a business. Remember the price and what your needs are. This fit our needs. It may or may not fit yours, but I certainly would recommend it to a friend as was done for me.
